Belgian municipality of Middelkerke is soon to become home to an iconic casino, the new architectural landmark along the Belgian coast. By integrating a casino into the landscape, creators intend to reinterpret the historical connection between the coastal town and the sea. Their plan is to use recycled materials and more efficient production processes. The new space will include a restaurant, event hall, and casino, placed behind transparent facades under the dune. The highest point of the ”dune landscape” will offer panoramic views of the North Sea and the sunset.
The winning proposal came from the Nautilus consortium, a collaboration between ZJA, an Amsterdam-based architecture firm, developer Ciril, and DEVLA (landscape architecture). Democo and Furnibo (constructors), executive architect Bureau Bouwtechniek, and OZ (casino and hotel design) are also part of the winning team. Their idea was selected as the best one, by the council of Middelkerke, in the Design & Build competition.
According to the mayor of Middelkerke, Jean-Marie Dedecker, the new project will enrich the Belgian coast, representing the character of the municipality. ”This project may mean the beginning of the renewal of Middelkerke’s town centre as an appealing place to live and visit.”, said the mayor.
