New York City-based cycle studio concept SoulCycle has revealed that it will open two more Canadian locations this year, after having opened its first Canadian studio in Toronto last month. A second Toronto studio will open in July, and a first Vancouver studio, with a location that has been a mystery until now, will also open this summer.
SoulCycle’s first Canadian studio, measuring just over 4,000 square feet, opened in late February at 435 King Street West. The studio includes a 55-bike cycling studio, as well as a small retail store and locker room areas for both men and women. Located just off of Spadina Avenue, the area is increasingly becoming hip and upscale, as new residents move into new condominium buildings in the area. Retail, restaurants and other amenities continue to open in the area.
SoulCycle’s second Canadian location will open in July of this year within the First Capital Realty-owned Yorkville Village retail complex, formerly called Hazelton Lanes. The mall is located in one of Canada’s wealthiest residential areas, and luxury retail continues to open nearby. According to a First Capital Realty lease plan, SoulCycle will measure 4,028 square feet and will feature access from both within the mall, as well as from Avenue Road. The Yorkville Village SoulCycle lease deal, as well as the 435 King Street deal, were both negotiated by Hilary Kellar-Parsons and Tyler Sopik of Avison Young.
A Vancouver SoulCycle location will open this summer in the downtown Yaletown area. According to a corporate submission on datagovca.com, SoulCycle will be located at 1128 Mainland Street, in a strategic location steps away from the Yaletown-Roundhouse Skytrain station. According to Spacelist.ca, the retail space at 1128 Mainland Street measures 3,518 square feet.
The Vancouver lease deal was negotiated by Martin Moriarty and Mario Negris of CBRE in Vancouver.
SoulCycle incorporates upper body exercises and high-energy music into each class, set in a dark candlelit room. SoulCycle is known for it’s cult following of riders, with a loyal clientele including names such as Michelle Obama, Oprah Winfrey, David Beckham, Demi Lovato, and Lady Gaga.
The company also offers a range of men and women’s athletic wear, in a separate retail space. The merchandise mix is consistent with SoulCycle’s American retail locations, featuring branded SoulCycle gear that is primarily in its signature yellow colour.
SoulCycle was founded by Elizabeth Cutler and Julie Rice in 2005. The company was acquired by Equinox Holdings Inc. in 2011, which currently operates two Equinox Fitness locations in Toronto and Vancouver. Equinox Fitness is a subsidiary of The Related Companies.
